Giordano Bruno GlobalShift University Consciousness Studies: PhD Program: Rationale Scientific Revolution and Consciousness Evolution

At the end of the nineteenth century the physiologist Claude Bernard stated that physics was a completed knowledge with not much more to find. Nonetheless, during the twentieth century Max Planck discovered the principles for quantum physics, a completely different conception of matter and energy constituting the Universe. This does not mean that classic physical statements were false, but they explained another level of the assembly of matter. The description of subatomic particles behavior demonstrated a dynamic organizing principle that replaced a static vision of the Cosmos.

Since then, matter is not seen anymore as inert as we used to think. Likewise, during the last five decades, the Mathematics of Non-linear Dynamical Systems as well as Chaos and Complex Systems Theory have shaken science to its foundation with the realization that very simple rules can give rise to extraordinarily intricate behaviors.

Under certain conditions of non-equilibrium, matter organizes itself into complex structures: witness the endlessly beauty of fractal forms or the foaming turbulence of a river. Even though chaos and emergence do not totally explain the vitalism of the self organizing cohesiveness, with such revelations, traditional cosmogonies that had opposed cosmos to chaos or rationality to passion were surpassed and those which had always integrated the two principles became relevant to Western epistemology.

Description of the program

Consciousness Studies is the first PhD Program at the Giordano Bruno University. Its aim is to familiarize doctoral students with a wide range of philosophical reflections, scientific findings and other facts and factors related to the phenomenology of consciousness - today's most significant and most rapidly evolving field of scientific and humanistic inquiry. Research Fields

The nature of consciousness is perhaps the most important question facing scientists and humanists today. In due recognition of its complexity, the Academic Council of the Giordano Bruno University has selected the following scientific research fields for the PhD Program,

1. Quantum Theory & Consciousness

2. Neurosciences & Consciousness

3. Cognitive Sciences & Consciousness

4. Cultural Studies & Consciousness

5. Humanities & Consciousness

6. Philosophy & Consciousness
